MARINE PROTECTED AREA

The Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area was established on October 21, 2002 by the Ministry of the Environment. It is a large nature park managed by the Municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa, encompassing almost the entire Pelagie archipelago. The goal is to protect and enhance the marine and coastal environment, its flora and fauna. The Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area often organizes various events and projects with the aim of raising awareness and preserving the entire territory and surrounding environment. The Pelagie Islands are of great importance for biodiversity as they host many marine species, varieties of fish, dolphins, and the famous Caretta Caretta sea turtles, which have entered the protection program because they are endangered species. This huge nature park includes an area of 4,367.73 hectares and is divided into three areas (A, B, C) with different levels of protection.
The headquarters of the Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area is located in Lampedusa, on Cameroni street, and operates the following opening hours: from 08.30 to 12.30 from Monday to Friday. The Marine Protected Area can be reached at the phone numbers +39 0922975780 and +39 0922975901.
ZONE A: MAXIMUM PROTECTION

ZONE B: GENERAL PROTECTION
It includes the stretch of sea in front of the northeastern coast, where activities with lower environmental impact are allowed while still protecting the marine environment.
ZONE C: PARTIAL PROTECTION
More activities are allowed compared to the other zones, but the environmental impact must be minimized.

THE CRYSTAL CLEAR SEA

Rabbit Beach: A paradise to discover
The Rabbit Beach, located on the southwest coast of Lampedusa, is one of the most enchanting destinations on the island. Famous for its white sand, crystal clear waters, and shifting colors, it was awarded ′The Most Beautiful Beach in the World′ in 2013 by TripAdvisor. A Protected Natural Reserve Part of the Lampedusa Island Natural Reserve and the Protected Marine Area of the Pelagie Islands, the beach is only accessible by reservation in the summer months, for a maximum of 1100 visitors a day, divided into two shifts. This system preserves the natural habitat, vital for the nesting of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta. The Rabbit Islet In front of the beach is the striking Rabbit Islet, accessible on foot through a stretch of shallow sea. The islet is also protected, and climbing on it is not allowed to protect the environment. Curiosities and History The Madonnina of the Sea: a 15-meter underwater sculpture dedicated to fishermen, blessed by Pope John Paul II and created by sculptor Giorgio Crosta. Villa Modugno: the singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno purchased a villa within the reserve in the ′70s, which he called "The Pool of God". An extraordinary place where nature and history intertwine to offer a unique experience.
Cala Pulcino: wild nature and crystal clear sea
Cala Pulcino, located on the southern slope of Lampedusa, is a captivating beach nestled in a valley near Rabbit Beach. Characterized by pure white sand, shallow bottoms and crystal-clear waters, it is a beloved destination for those seeking pristine landscapes and tranquility. An Adventure in Nature To reach it, it is necessary to follow the Scissors Path, a route of about 30 minutes that starts from Casa Teresa, the oldest dammuso in Lampedusa. During the journey, you′ll be immersed in a wild, silent environment, perfect for those who love trekking. Snorkeling and Restrictions Cala Pulcino is also a perfect location for snorkeling and diving. However, for safety reasons related to the risk of landslides, access to the beach has been prohibited for several years and it is not allowed to stay with towels or umbrellas. A suggestive stop for nature and sea lovers, to explore respecting its fragile ecosystem.
The Tabaccara: the natural swimming pool of Lampedusa
La Tabaccara, located on the southern slope of Lampedusa, is a charming bay known as "The Natural Pool" or "Fly Boat Bay" for the optical effect that makes boats seem suspended in the air thanks to its crystal clear waters. Origins of the name and accessibility The name "Tabaccara" could derive from ancient exchanges of tobacco and cigars that occurred in a cave of the bay. Mainly accessible by sea, it is also visible from land via a trail. A suggestive place for boat trips The bay is a popular destination for boats organizing trips, both day and night, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable spectacle.
